Hoppy Easter!

Caroline and RichardToday as I sat at my desk in our Annapolis Bakery and watched the snow and rain through the window I thought, surely Spring is about to show us the colorful buds and flowers we have come to expect at this time of year.  Their bright reminder of new beginnings is still hiding under the comfort of the warm earth and their delayed presence dampens our anticipation.
So I turn my sights to our shop and see the example of new beginnings I was missing. Our two new bakery cases are filled with colorful cupcakes, cake pops, scones, cookies and, of course, cakes. What a delight it is to see such a colorful, tasty array! The day is warmed by happy planning of all the bakery items we will be able to offer to our long-time customers in the Annapolis area. My favorites
are our meringue shells and meringue layers that we will fill with fruit, lemon curd, whipped cream, chocolate or caramel. Their lightness will be perfect for the Spring!

Spartanburg is delighting with the wonderful aroma of lemon and coconut as our shipments build for the Easter weekend.  The chocolate ladybugs and bees have found their way onto more cakes than ever. It is such a fun time for the girls in the bakery in 'Sparkle City.'

Tomorrow, at our Annapolis location, the day will be filled with a photo shoot for The Scout Guide. If you do not know of this publication, it may be found at www.thescoutguide.com. Susie Matheson and Christy Ford of Charlottesville, VA, have scouted out the best of the best in twenty of the top cities in the USA to help guide you to the destinations you would not want to miss when visiting these cities. Eleven more guides are planned to debut throughout the Spring and early Summer. We are thrilled to have been sought out to be included in the Annapolis/Eastern Shore guide.

With bunnies to decorate, egg whites to whip and caramel to cook with care, I must hop off to the kitchen.
May you all have a wonderful holiday and may new beginnings fill your Spring.
Hoppy, Hoppy,
Caroline

Mother's Day.........here we are again. This special time of the year that brings with it so many memories and so many feelings of appreciation.

As I knew I would not be with
my mother for Mother's Day I took a day off last week and went to Charleston
to spend the day with her.
We made a leisurely drive up to Georgetown
and across the beautiful marshes
of South Carolina.
After an enjoyable lunch at The Rice Paddy
we continued on to the country house
where she had enjoyed entertaining friends and my father's customers for so many years. It was wonderful to walk the grounds and listen to the memories unfold once again.

On our drive back I kept us both in hysterics
as I remembered many of the crazy,
mischievous things I did as a child.
Mother often threw her head back,
putting the back of her hand on her
forehead and exclaimed
how she did not know how she had made it through all those times.
Then, with wonder in her voice she would say,
how had I, after being such a rascal as a child,
built a business like Caroline's Cakes.
"Well, I guess it was all worth it," she said.
And I reassured her that her influence in my life
was such a great part of everything I am doing
as I expand this wonderful cake company, keeping true to the values of quality and taking care of others......just as she taught me to do.

Thank you, Mother......and the biggest of hugs!

I am so very lucky she is here to enjoy this incredible ride with me.
Every story you email or call to share with us,
I share with her. She delights in hearing it all.

I wish you all a very Happy Mother's Day
and thank you so much
for the time you take to
share your experiences with our cakes,
our gourmet food items and
your times in our shop, for they in
turn are a gift I share with my Mother.

Have a wonderful Mother's Day!

A Special Mother's Day note from Richard, Caroline's youngest son!

Caroline, Richard and Grandmother

As Mother's Day quickly approaches
I thought that it would be appropriate
to take the time to say thank you to
my Mother.....
the ONE and ONLY
  Caroline Ragsdale Reutter,
founder of Caroline's Cakes!
As many of you may know
Caroline's Cakes started with serving the
very first Caramel Cake
at my christening...(You can thank me later!)
I, like my mother, grew up enjoying this cake at special and everyday occasions.
All the Mother's Day orders for Caramel Cakes,
 reminds me of the importance
of this very special holiday.

I was thrilled to be with Mom as she accepted
the Crandall Close Bowles '65
Professional Achievement Award
at Ashley Hall last month.

Check out the event photos at:

The awards luncheon was filled with so many wonderful moments and all of the award recipients have such an amazing support
group in the Ashley Hall community.
We spent the afternoon walking
on King Street enjoying some time together
outside of the business as Mother and son.
At the end of the weekend Mom returned to Spartanburg and I continued onto Annapolis.
It was back to work for both of us!

I hope that you all remember
the Moms in your lives on
Mother's Day and every day!

Last Chance to celebrate March Madness! 7-Layer Caramel Cake at 13% off for just one more week!

What a month!
Crazy weather, crazy schedule and
crazy how many people with March birthdays
are in my life now!  I need a rest! But no time to stop now. Easter is just around the corner, with graduations and communions right behind.

I took a little pause in work this past weekend
to drive to Charleston to spend time with my
Mother. It is so interesting how we learn about
ourselves through our mother's eyes. She just
can not get over that her mischievous child has
such a cake business. We shared many laughs
as I told her some of the recent happenings at
the Bakery.

Sometimes I just think we are a reality show.
Just last week a customer asked that we make a
cake to send to the someone in the Athletic Department
at Chapel Hill. Usually, we would just put our chocolate dots in the schools' colors and decorate the cake with those,
but our dear Jessica had another creative brainstorm
and piped out little blue chocolate footprints with black
chocolate in the heel of the foot for the 'Tarheels.'
It was adorable.

Now all that sounds just fine, right?
Well, the staff was so tickled with the cake they posted
a picture of it on our Facebook page.
Now that sounds just fine too...right?
You see at Caroline's Cakes we think of 'March Madness' as the month we discount our Caramel Cake for all of our
customers in celebration of my birth month.
Let's just say that the morning after the picture was posted,
I spent three hours fending off Facebook posts and emails from our adorable, yet 'outraged,' customers who thought we were supporting one team over another.
We are quick learners here at Caroline's Cakes, and now we are talking about that other 'March Madness' and referring to the 'Sweet Sixteen,' the 'Elite Eight' and the 'Final Four.'
Some of us have even become experts
on the different school mascots.

Jessica has been busy decorating other cakes in the different
schools' colors. And Laura has been trying to take photos of all to post on our Facebook page.
I do not think we will be able to get everything up this year as it looks as if we are approaching the finals, but we will have the complete album up on Facebook very shortly.
If you want to be sure that we represent your school let us know. We have been doing this for high schools, colleges, universities and sororities for several years. You may visit our new "Dot Page" on the website to choose your schools colors for your cake.
Think graduations!

This all happened in the middle of the Bakery making
350 miniature Caramel Cakes and Laura, Kathy and Alison boxing them in our special gift packing for a benefit we are sponsoring at The Gibbes Art Museum in Charleston, SC, this coming Friday. Carolyne Roehm will speak at the luncheon and our miniature Caramel Cakes will be on everyone's plate in their blue and white boxes with
a little silver fork tied in the bow of the ribbon.
This has been the first time we have done something like this and it has been a wonderful, if challenging, experience.
So you see, life at Caroline's Cakes is not always a
'Cake Walk.' but we never lose our sense of humor.....
That is what carries us through.
WHEW!!!!........Come on April.......we are ready........

Hoppy Easter.......Happy Spring.......

As always.......
